Apr 2008 Completing the 3-Dimensional Picture, William E Harrell, Jr, DMD, Chris Lane (USA) American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 133:612-20
Orthodontics has a commitment to precision and accuracy. Many are familiar with the advances in 3D computed tomography, specifically cone-beam technology; this article focuses on a sister imaging technology called 3D surface imaging. These 3D systems enable extraoral imaging protocols to be equally precise in providing highly accurate 3D facial surface images for diagnosis, analysis, treatment monitoring, simulation, and outcome evaluation.

Evaluating the “Anatomic Truth” of our patient’s anatomy in 3D has traditionally been limited to evaluating the patient “live” in the chair and by the evaluations of dental study models (either plaster or 3-D digital representations). New 3-D technologies (3D facial scanning and 3D cone beam CBCT are
just beginning to be introduced into the dental and orthodontic communities in order to evaluate the three dimensional anatomic relationships of the
patient’s true anatomy.

Hermann, Andrea Van Pelt, Daniel Govier, Marissa Tenenbaum, Sybill Naidoo, Per Larsen, Sven Kreiborg, Rasmus Larsen and Alex A. Kane Scandinavian Conference on Image Analysis, Aalborg, Denmark
Deformational plagiocephaly is a term describing cranial a-symmetry and deformation commonly seen in infants. The purpose of this work was to develop a methodology for assessment and modeling of head asymmetry. The clinical population consisted of 38 infants for whom 3D surface scans of the head had been obtained both before and after their helmet orthotic treatment.

Measuring some parameters using non-invasive, three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques which are in strong agreement with cephalometric standards may be helpful for regular diagnosis and treatment planning in orthodontic patients. There were significant correlations between the cephalometric hard and soft tissue and 3D soft tissue measurements in children with class II division 1 occlusion. This suggests that 3D images could partially replace conventional cephalometric radiographs.
Nov 2006 The Role of Maxillary Development in Dental-Facial Aesthetics: Case Reports, Theodore Belfor, DDS (USA) Dentistry Today
The objective of this article is to discuss the relationship between maxillary development and facial aesthetics in adults. Three cases are presented that show that facial enhancement can be accomplished by developing the maxilla in adults. A 3dMD facial capture system (3dMD) and analytical software are employed to quantify the facial changes.

The purpose of this study was to determine the soft tissue changes associated with bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) of the mandible, performed with or without a midline osteotomy (MC). This study demonstrated that the soft tissue changes occur at a higher degree outside the facial midline. This may represent a limitation of 2D lateral cephalometric soft tissue analysis. 3D analysis of soft tissue changes, using the 3dMD imager allows accurate facial analysis of the A-P, vertical, and transverse changes induced by orthognathic surgery. Supported by the NIH Grant No. T35 DE07150.

The purpose of this research project is to evaluate several methods for quantitative wound assessment- wound volume, wound area, and wound coloration. By comparing various assessment parameters for the same patient population, conclusions can be drawn on which information is most useful to the clinical community and which information can be collected in a reasonable amount of time in the busy environment of the health care clinic.
