Introduction: The pre-surgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) treatment protocol for cleft patients has been described by Grayson et al. (1993), Brecht et al. (1995), and Cutting et al. (1998). Pre-surgical nasal molding produces tissue expansion of the columella and nasal lining. The purpose of this case report was to measure progressive 3D nasal form changes in an infant with unilateral cleft lip and palate during the course of nasoalveolar molding therapy before surgery.
Material and Method: An 8-year old male infant presented with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate. His soft tissue was captured with the 3dMD system (3dMD, Atlanta, USA) at the beginning and after the 4-month nasoalveolar molding therapy. Ten landmarks were determined to measure nasal soft tissue differences on the 3dMD images. The 3dMD software was used to evaluate nasal soft tissue changes after nasoalveolar molding therapy.
Results: When the 3dMD photographs taken before and after nasoalveolar molding treatment were evaluated, it was found that length of the ala increased slightly on both right and left side. Width of both nostril floors was enlarged in comparison to the beginning. Significant increase in length of the columella on the left side was obtained after nasoalveolar molding therapy.
Conclusion: Nasoalveolar molding therapy provided clinicians with more feasible proportions for successful surgical results. The 3dMD system was useful to perform facial analysis for observing growth and treatment changes of newborn with cleft lip and palate.
