Biometrics/Security
In the world of security and biometrics the face is the most accessible feature of a
human subject, yet there has been very little real work on analyzing and recognizing
the 3D information in faces. 3dMD is allowing breakthroughs to be made in this area by
permitting large and diverse populations samples to be acquired easily by researchers. Recent
customers in the biometric field include:
- Arizona State University (US)
- SUNY at Binghamton (US)
- University of Kent (UK)
- University of Notre Dame (US)
- University of Nottingham (UK)
- University of Surrey (UK)
- University of St Andrews (UK)
- US Department of Defense
3dMD is also involved in a number of classified projects where the technology is
expected to facilitate some major breakthroughs to help our world become a safer place.
Apparel/Accessories Sizing
3dMD offers apparel manufacturers an alternative for capturing customer size and shape measurements to improve the fit and physical comfort of their products. The company developed a portable system for Regent Medical (formerly SSL International plc), a major supplier of fitted surgical gloves. This system instantly generates an accurate 360-degree model of the hand with all of the relevant measurements.

3dMDs sister company, 3Q inc, is focused on transitioning the paradigm of human form documentation to objective 3D photography and 3D surface motion capture, thus providing the dimension required for measurement, assessment, and realism, all of which are critical to the following market sectors.
Film/Media Production
3Q offers film/media production studios an alternative solution for the creation of
highly realistic digital actors, which includes every tiny detail and every little
wrinkle. 3Q will shift the paradigm from the time consuming, expensive method of
animators artistically crafting each human character from scratch to an automatic
character generation methodology that provides the animator with multiple 3D models
to use as a creative foundation, saving the animator time and the company money.
With the ultra fast speed of capture, the companys technology enables animators to
capture multiple facial expressions to feed the production pipeline.
Walt Disney Feature Animation became a customer of the company in March 2003. Activision purchased a 3dMDbody System in 2007.
Location-based Entertainment
On a lighter note, the company has taken its sophisticated 3D medical imaging
technology and has packaged it in a robust, user-friendly experience that is
fun for people of all ages and technical aptitudes. With 3Q's personalized
technology, science centers, museums and entertainment complexes can provide a
fun, memorable 3D experience for visitors.
The robustness of our technology is well demonstrated in our Welcome Wing exhibit
at the London Science Museum, where hundreds of visitors a week are able generating a
3D model of their face by pressing a couple of buttons. Our system has been in daily
use for more than five years.
